Summer Jobs +

Greetings Friends and Colleagues-
Spring has been super busy for our team. We presented at the National Youth Employment Coalition Conference in March and at the California Workforce Association conference in April. This spring we thought we would share some resources that have come our way that are designed to guide and support summer youth programming.
Best,

This spring, the Obama Administration announced Summer Jobs + 2012 calling for the collaboration of "businesses, non-profits, and government to work together to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth for the summer of 2012, with a goal of reaching 250,000 employment opportunities..." The Department of Labor has a new website called Summer Jobs + 2012 for summer employment for youth. There ARE ACTUALLY JOBS listed on the site! Check it out.

In case you missed the press conference and career fair on May 12th, Mayor Ed Lee launched SF Summer Jobs + challenged local employers to pledge positions for youth this summer. There's a space for youth to log-in and find summer jobs.

Larry Robbin is giving a workshop called "Our Youth Need Jobs, But We’re Not an Employment Program" On Tuesday, June 5th in partnership with the John Burton Foundation’s Homeless Youth Capacity Building Project. The workshop will be 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at The California Endowment in downtown Oakland. Register here.

It's a few years old but as a basic resource guide and primer to WIA youth programming the Toolkit For Effective Front-Line Services To Youth produced by the Department of Labor has some great resources for new front-line staff. It has a very useful section on developing the individual service strategy and assessment tools with lots of great templates for you to use.

The WorkReady Classroom out of the Philadelphia Youth Network is our favorite "go-to" site for youth workshop ideas. There are new workshops uploaded daily by participants nationally. Recent sample titles include "Code Switching" and "Criticism, Praise, or Feedback."
