Breathe and take a moment to recognize all you do

I am working right now with a number of youth organizations that are in the throes of summer programming.  Anyone who's ever run summer youth programs knows that, in addition to being incredibly fun, the frenzied pace truly tests your stamina.  I always remember sighing in relief when school started and being so proud of what we'd accomplished, sometimes gracefully and other times fairly awkwardly.

We just want to remind you to take a moment to breathe.  In . . . out.  And again . . .

Now that you've gotten some oxygen to your overworked brain cells, take another moment to think about how you can appreciate one person, your co-workers, yourself, without whom you could not make it through the summer.  And who work so hard on behalf of young people.

Here is a comprehensive list of 50 free and low-cost recognition ideas if you need some inspiration (compiled by Michigan's Office of Great Workplace Development - why doesn't California have one of these?!):  http://www.michigan.gov/documents/firstgentleman/50_242400_7.pdf

Some of our favorites:

  • Say, “Thank you”
  • Give out traveling awards like a rubber chicken or other fun item
  • Have a picnic, either indoors or outdoors
  • Give someone you appreciate an extra long lunch break (only, of course, if you have that authority!)
  • Greet co-workers every morning to let them know you're glad they're there

Hang in there and make sure you have some fun too!
