Work-Based Learning: What is it & Resources

Greetings Everyone-
Fall has zoomed by. We have been very busy this Fall providing a series of 11 trainings to the SF Department of Children, Youth and Their Families grantees. In particular, we delivered a three-part series on work-based learning (WBL) and ways that community-based organizations (CBOs) can effectively implement WBL at their sites. CBOs often struggle to  partner with schools and businesses. Our workshops focused on ways that CBOs can support academic achievement by infusing common core academic standards into fun, hands-on projects. We also focused on ways that CBO's can promote workplace standards even if youth aren't participating in activities directly in the workplace.

We thought we'd share with you some of the resources we have used to guide our content for these workshops. Most of these are helpful primers to understanding the changing nature of work-based learning.

New Ways to Work: Quality Work-Based Learning Toolkit  Fantastic tools to guide staff development and planning discussions around work-based learning.

Youth Workforce Development System Competencies: Developed by the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board in Philidelphia. We used these competencies throughout our trainings to provide guidance for lesson and project planning.

Ensuring Quality in Work-Based Learning: A quick summary of what WBL is from WestEd

Work-Based Learning: Career Practicum: Defnitions, Quality Criteria, and Student Outcomes: from a consortium of partners including WestEd, the National Academy Foundation, and WestEd

Work-Based Learning in California: Opportunities and Models for Expansion from WestEd

Common Core Standards: The great thing about the new national Common Core academic standards is that they are aligned with college and work expectations. Planning projects using academic standards is now much more manageable for CBO's.

We hope that these tools are helpful to you. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions: (510) 325-6959 or info@pathwaysconsultants.com
